When you come to the land that God your Lord is giving you as a heritage, occupying and settling it,
An Intercessor for sin: After the Blessings Moshe begins to warn about the other part of covenant, the curses for disobedience, or intentional rebellion.
Devarim (Deuteronomy) 28:15 “But it shall come to pass, if you will not listen to the voice of the LORD your God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command you this day, that all these curses shall come on you, and overtake you”. Targum Yonatan inserts the following Midrashic commentary to separate the blessings from the curses in Torah.
When Mosheh the prophet began to pronounce the words of threatening the earth trembled, the heavens were moved, the sun and moon were darkened, the stars withdrew their beams, the fathers of the world cried from their sepulchres, while all creatures were silent, the very trees waved not their branches. The fathers of the world answered and said, Woe to our children should they sin, and bring these maledictions upon them; for how will they bear them? lest destruction be executed on them, and no merit of ours protect, and there be no man to stand and intercede on their behalf! Then fell the Bath-kol from the high heavens, and said, Fear not, ye fathers of the world; if the merit of all generations should fail, yours shall not; and the covenant which I have confirmed with you shall not be annulled, but will (still) overshadow them. Mosheh the prophet answered and said, Whomsoever I threaten I threaten conditionally, saying, If you hearken not to the Word of the Lord your God in neither observing nor doing all my commandments and statutes which I command you this day, then shall all these maledictions come upon and cleave unto you. [Deuteronomy 28:15, Targum Pseudo-Yonatan]
God assures the patriarchs that it is not dependent on the covenant made at Sinai, that their children will be blessed, but the covenant He made with them out of His faithfulness not their merit. HaShem says “the covenant which I have confirmed with you shall not be annulled, but will (still) overshadow them.” So we see there will never be a time with no man to intercede on Israel’s behalf, but the same one, in whom the promises were made, and the covenant established, is standing in the gap eternally.
Yeshiyahu Ha Navi says of this one intercessor “You are my witnesses,” says the LORD, “With my servant whom I have chosen; that you may know and believe me, and understand that I am he. Before me there was no God formed, neither will there be after me. I myself am the LORD; and besides me there is no savior. I have declared, I have saved, and I have shown; and there was no strange god among you. Therefore you are my witnesses,” says the LORD, “and I am God. (Isaiah 43:10-12)
Yeshua said “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30) and as Messianic believers it is easy to see our intercessor for blessings has always been there and eternally is. He is the one: who was, and is, and is to come. And while some think Yeshua “strange” the Father says ” and there was no strange god among you.”
Targum Yonatan says Moshe answered HaShem by saying ” Whomsoever I threaten I threaten conditionally” “then shall all these maledictions come upon and cleave unto you.” directing the blessings and curses individually, not nationally. So while Yeshua and the Ruach of the Father watch over the promises made to the patriarch’s for the nation, we as individuals can walk in blessings, or curses according to our position in Yeshua, and the Torah. “If you love me, keep my Mitzvot” (John 14:15) and according to this weeks Parshat – blessings will overtake you – (not curses) if you Love Messiah and do the things that please Him. He tells us what they are in the Torah, and if you fail from time to time you have a “man to stand and intercede on your behalf!”
May you be abundantly blessed, as you make Teshuvah in this month of Elul, Sounding the Shofar daily, looking forward to Yom Teruah, and the Fall feasts. (see Festivals and Events for more details)
